Presidents Report 2017-2018

Whakatane Rowing Club 2017-18

The 2017 – 18 rowing season was a tough season for the Club for many reasons.

However I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have participated in the Club, Rowers, Coaches, Committee, Parents and Supporters.

The success of the Club needs everyone to be involved and contribute as and when they can.  The Blue Lakes Regatta was run in excellent weather.  A great turn out by the whole club with excellent results and a great fundraising opportunity.

The passing of Life Member, and long serving Club Secretary Gaye Spargo is remembered with sadness.

My thanks to the committee for their ongoing support, and help with organising activities, and fundraising.  Their support for Gaye, myself and Tysh is greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank everyone who helped coach throughout the year.  Pete Olifiers, Chick Hammond and Tysh Hubbard, with support from Graham Watt.

On the National scene, we note Elliot Jenkins making the New Zealand Junior team

Blue Lake Regatta 2018

The club enjoyed excellent water and weather conditions for the annual club regatta held last Sunday on the Rotorua  Blue Lake .

There were 20 clubs competing with secondary school and masters age crews racing for points to find a winner of  the Dewar Shield honours . The winner this year was  the Tauranga Rowing Club with the Whakatane Club finishing fifth.

Whakatane crews gained five firsts, five second and five third place finishes in an excellent days racing.

A Celebration of the life of Gaye Spargo

A celebration of the life of Whakatane Rowing Club life member Gaye Spargo was held on Monday the 20th November 2017 at the Ohope Hall in Ohope Beach.

Friend and neighbour Ruth Missen spoke of her friendship with Gaye, Steve and Tysh and long time friend Mary Brook recounted her experiences with Gaye travelling to and working in the United Kingdom. Gary McAdams spoke on behalf of the rowing club and good friend Andrew O’Reilly spoke of the bond he and Natalie had with Gaye, Steve and Tysh through their association with rowing.

A committal was held at Hillcrest Cemetery followed by refreshments at the Whakatane Rowing Club which was attended by a large number of friends and fellow rowers from near and far.

Gaye worked as a graphic designer for Mann Printing in Whakatane and while her daughter Tysh was in high school Gaye took her down to the Whakatane Rowing Club to get her involved in rowing.

The club captain and coach at the time was Steve Brine and as they say the rest is history. Gaye became the club secretary and with Steve they both worked tirelessly with committee members to build up a strong well equipped club with boats and facilities amongst the best in the country. Gaye worked extremely hard to organise the very successful centenary celebrations in june 2013 which attracted around 200 past and present rowers for an event packed weekends festivities.

Besides the long hours spent organising the local Whakatane regatta both Gaye and Steve rowed in masters events and also  helped out in official capacities at many of the other regattas held at Karapiro and other venues.

Gaye and Steve were married at a ceremony held at the rowing club earlier this year with their many friends and family present to celebrate the occasion.

We wish to extend our deepest sympathy to Steve and Tysh and all the family members at this time.
